Shown above is two types of annotation styles I used this semester in English 110. The first photo shows a more detailed version of a style of annotating which I used in high school. I interacted with the text in a few different ways, such as commenting and asking questions, but there was not a lot of space to write. This restricted me from writing everything I had anted to. The second photo shows an annotation style suggested in English 110 of using sticky notes to interact with the text and summarize key parts, and I enjoyed it because there was ample space to write my thoughts down as I was reading. The downfall was that sticky notes sometimes fall off, get ripped, etc. They are not attached to the text, which I definitely prefer. I believe the most essential piece of strong annotation practice is your interaction with the text. Not only should you be summarizing, but also asking questions, commenting as you read, making connections, adding to the author’s ideas, etc. Have a conversation with the text as you read to get the most out of what you are reading.
