Editing with The Little Seagull

Section S-9 inĀ The Little Seagull discusses shifts in verb tense, point of view, and number. I focused on the section about shifts in verb tense. It explained that verb tense can change when you want to emphasize that actions take place at different times. In literary works, preset tense should be used at all times. I often find myself thinking about which tense I should be using and when, so this section was very helpful. For example, in my literacy narrative I used the present tense to describe St. Francis because the school is still the same today. However, I had to switch to past tense when I started talking about things the school did while I was there because I was talking about the experiences I had 10 years ago.

    Hi, Tori,
I’m glad you found this section helpful. I don’t usually dedicate time to this in class, but if you have any questions, be sure to ask me (either during or after class). Good application to your writing!
